Razzmatazz Getting to know...Sarah

Hi, my name is Sarah Mir. I have been coming to South Ruislip Christian Fellowship in Deane Avenue since I was 10 years old.

I grew up in South Ruislip with my mum and one brother, and a cat called Tabby. My dad died when I was 9 years old. This was a very difficult time for us, I didn’t understand why something so sad could be allowed to happen. I grew to realise that sad things happen to people all the time and we have to find a way to accept this. For me knowing that God was bigger than all my sad feelings and the difficult days, that God could take it if I was mad at him and that He loved me more than anything really helped.

I went to Queensmead School and met my best friends, we still keep in touch and our children are great friends. I did OK at school, my favourite subject was English. I was useless at P.E and was always picked last for any team games! I once threw the shot put 3 feet on sports day. This was a great achievement!!

During this time at school I joined the youth group at church. We would meet on a Sunday night at a young couple’s house. The fun and games we had were great. To have someone away from the family that I could talk to, where I learnt more about my faith and spent time with other young Christians was really invaluable.

At 18, I decided to move away from home and I went to work in a children’s home in Broadstairs, Kent. I loved living by the sea and when I retire I plan to have a little place on the sea front again!

After a year of fending for myself I decided to come home and let mum look after me again. I began work for the civil service at the Land Registry in Harrow. On my first day I met a not very tall, fairly dark, reasonably handsome stranger and five years later, in 1993, we got married. Jimmy (the stranger) had been brought up in a Muslim home and this presented a number of challenges. We spent time together studying both the Bible and the Koran. Jimmy became a Christian in September 1992. He heard a preacher talk about the joy of the cross.

Jesus suffering and dying is something most people only glance over at Easter. The reality is that Jesus also experienced joy because He knew that by dying on the cross each person could have a personal relationship with God the father, if they want it.

We have now been married 13 years, we have three children aged 10, 7 and 5 and a crazy cat called Oliver. We live in Ruislip manor and enjoy being part of the family at South Ruislip Christian Fellowship.

I work part time at a Day Centre for Adults with Learning Disabilities. It is a job I love. Jim works as a senior manager for the NHS in Ealing.

I am reading this and wondering who is this settled, middle-aged person? When did I grow up? Sometimes I don’t feel old enough to cope with the problems life throws at me, but I have a great big God who promises never to leave me or forsake me and will never burden me with things I cannot manage, with his strength.

I have been involved in leading children’s activities in the church for a number of years. I ran a crèche for under five’s on a Sunday morning and I help with the 11 – 14 years now on a Sunday morning. I used to work with Granville Richards and then Phil and Liz Platt at Sunshine Corner. Now I lead the team with Nicki Lewington, running Razzmatazz. I love the noise and the fun that we have together at Razzmatazz and bringing children the news that God loves them and each one of them is special and that they can have this amazing God in their lives is a real privilege.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Kids, remember to tell me one thing you can remember from my story on Wednesday at Razzmatazz to earn those extra points!!
